STSS Demonstration Satellites, Built by Northrop Grumman, Show New ‘Remote Cueing’ Capabilities During Aegis Test

The Space Tracking and Surveillance System (STSS) demonstration satellites, built and operated by Northrop Grumman Corporation, contributed to a successful sea-based missile defense test April 15 by acquiring, after being cued remotely, a target missile during the midcourse phase of its flight.

MDAA Alert: You Can’t Stop What’s Coming

Dear Members and Friends,

Last night high above in the midnight blue over the Pacific Ocean, off the west coast of Kauai, Hawaii the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor collided at high speed with a single-stage scud-like target missile high in the earth’s atmosphere. The target, a liquid fueled short-range ballistic missile with very similar characteristics to a current Iranian short-range missile, was launched from a barge floating at sea. It was intercepted by a THAAD missile that was shot from its mobile launcher deployed at the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) at 3:37 a.m. EDT.

MDAA Alert – The Romanian Proposal

Dear Members and Friends,

The President of Romania, Mr. Traian Basescu, announced his willingness to negotiate terms with the United States to host a U.S. Land-based Aegis Ashore Missile Defense system last week. Basescu stated that the proposed system could be in place by 2015. The formal invitation for cooperation came directly from President Barack Obama and was initiated by Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to Romania in October 2009. The potential addition of another international partner in missile defense is a welcome movement towards a global missile defense community. There are now 40 countries participating, including Romania, with the United States on missile defense.

This Romanian proposal does have serious challenges, both politically and technically, to be a sound investment of United States tax dollars and in its alignment with the President’s Missile Defense plan.
