This year Taiwan started to deploy supersonic anti-ship missiles in response to China’s growing naval arsenal. Those third generation Hsiung Feng missiles that are now positioned on some 20 ships point to a strengthening in Taiwan’s normally low-key domestic missile production. But its military might is growing at a time when relations with Beijing are better than ever.

Russia Implements North Korea Sanctions

U.N. Approved Sanctions on North Korea

Russian President Medvedev has signed off on an order to implement sanctions against North Korea.  The sanctions are being used to pressure North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons program.

Russia’s president has signed an order formally implementing U.N. Security Council-approved sanctions against North Korea.

The sanctions were passed in June by the Security Council, which includes Russia, after the country conducted a nuclear test. The sanctions are aimed at pushing North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons program.

North Korea Hints At Continued Uranium Enrichment

The North Korean government released a statement accusing the United States of playing a “waiting” game to witness the fall of its Communist government as well as labeling the U.S. as “incompetent”.  This is being interpreted as a clear sign of the North’s intention to continue its uranium enrichment program.  The statement further noted that North Korea is actively considering producing uranium fuel for its water reactor power plant.

North Korea is actively considering to fabricate a light-water nuclear reactor and produce uranium fuel to power it, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said Tuesday.

“The DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, official name for North Korea) will witness the appearance of a light water reactor power plant relying on its own nuclear fuel in the near future in the 2010s,” the KCNA said in a statement.
