Raytheon Company has received a $1.7 billion Direct Commercial Sales contract to upgrade Saudi Arabia’s Patriot Air and Missile Defense System to the latest Configuration-3. The award includes ground-system hardware, a full training package and support equipment upgrades.

U.S. senators are aiming to eliminate funding for a missile defense program being developed by Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT) in collaboration with Italy and Germany.Senator Mark Begich, Democrat of Alaska, and at least six other Democratic and Republican members of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, will try to strike the Pentagon’s funding request for the Medium Extended Air Defense System, or Meads.

When President Barack Obama came into office, many people (this writer included), expected him to mothball the nation’s missile defense program, much as President Bill Clinton had done. During his campaign, Obama gave lip service to the concept but promised to slice funding for “unproven” systems.

PAC-3 MSE Missile
Raytheon Company’s Patriot Air and Missile Defense System successfully test fired Lockheed Martin’s PAC-3 MSE (Missile Segment Enhancement) missile recently at White Sands Missile Range, N.M.
“This demonstration of Lockheed Martin’s MSE missile with the Patriot system builds on the family of combat-proven GEM and PAC-3 interceptors already available with Patriot and continues a rich history of integrating new technologies and capabilities,” said Sanjay Kapoor, vice president for Patriot Programs at Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems (IDS).
