The first Lockheed Martin-built Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) geosynchronous (GEO-1) spacecraft beamed down its first infrared image on June 21 to the SBIRS ground station. Following its May 7 launch, the satellite is performing as expected, and is now undergoing early orbit testing.

In the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, a large, white radome dominates the high ground at Tobyhanna Army Depot symbolizing the growing number of radars and sensors that depot personnel maintain for the military.

Luis Velez, left, and John Radzikowski set up a Lightweight Counter Mortar Radar system for rotation testing in an anechoic test chamber. Tobyhanna Army Depot employees conduct full organic repair on the entire AN/TPQ-48 LCMR system.
Radars at Tobyhanna run the gamut from Air Defense, Air Traffic Control, Ground Surveillance, Airborne, Shipborne, Range Threat systems and critical Counter Fire systems, supporting the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy.

On Redstone Arsenal, the plant will be near the offices of the Missile Defense Agency and other customers, and there is already an infrastructure used in integrating large-scale rocket and propulsion systems and the explosive materials they use, he said. The area has a talented workforce and state training programs that will allow employees to come on board ready to work; connections with the University of Alabama in Huntsville and other area institutions for other workforce development and training; and more.

Raytheon Company has received a $1.7 billion Direct Commercial Sales contract to upgrade Saudi Arabia’s Patriot Air and Missile Defense System to the latest Configuration-3. The award includes ground-system hardware, a full training package and support equipment upgrades.

LaBarge, Inc. a provider of electronics manufacturing services (EMS), has been awarded a contract from The Boeing Company to produce wiring harnesses for the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) System. Financial terms were not disclosed. LaBarge anticipates follow-on orders.
