BMD-Enhanced Aegis Cruiser Meets Expectations

Hugo Chavez condemns US sanctions over Iran, jokes about missile being pointed at US

CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez mocked U.S. concerns about Venezuela’s ties with Iran on Tuesday, joking that while his adversaries worry about Iranian-made missiles lining his country’s coast his government is actually erecting windmills there.

The socialist leader at first said missiles could be launched at Washington and other U.S. cities, then held up a photograph of windmills along the South American country’s coast, saying “here they are.”

MDAA Defender of the Month, April 2011 – Captain Kirby Atwell

Dear Members and Friends,

On behalf of all of our members, we are proud to announce the April 2011 Defender of the Month, Captain Kirby Atwell, United States Army. CPT Atwell is currently the Commander, 10th Missile Defense Detachment, 100th Missile Defense Brigade (GMD) / 94th AAMDC (FWD) in Shariki, Japan. He is the first Commander of the forward-based AN/TPY-2 Radar stationed there.

Captain Atwell is the National Guard’s 1st Quarter selection for MDAA’s Defender of the Month.

MDAA Alert: Duty, Honor, Country

Dear Members and Friends,

Protruding west on the high ground, forcing the massive Hudson River to  bend, is the strategic point chosen by then General George Washington to defend New York. Upon that ground a fort was established; one of the first built and paid for by the U.S. Congress. This natural location on the west point forced sailing ships to navigate around a massive curve in the river, tacking up wind against the current from New York City and blocked sailing ships coming south from the St. Lawrence waterway in Canada. These factors, along with field artillery and heavy chains put across the river, deterred the world’s greatest Navy and the world’s greatest weapon of the time, the “man-of-war” sailing ship, from splitting the young colonies and dividing the fledgling nation.

MDAA Alert: Love at First Site

Dear Members and Friends, 

Undersecretary of State Ellen Tauscher and Romanian President Traian Basescu announced in Bucharest today that Romania and the Deveselu Air Base near Caracal, 125 miles southwest of Bucharest, will be the site of the first deployed United States Aegis Ashore missile defense system. This system is scheduled to be deployed by 2015 and will play a pivotal role in defending Europe and deterring Middle Eastern countries, such as Iran, from using or threatening to use ballistic missiles against European populations, NATO and U.S. military forward operating bases.
