OPINION:

The negotiations conducted over 8 – 9 June on anti-ballistic missile (ABM) issues as part of NATO-Russia Council can not be called successful. The parties involved did not come to a compromise about the format for Russia’s participation in the “European missile defense” project. This gave rise to a plethora of comments in the Russian and American media about the end of the “reset policy”. Russian-American dialogue, of course, will continue. But no one can deny that this is an alarming sign for Moscow-Washington relations.

OPINION:

In March 2009, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presented her Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, with a red button symbolizing a new “reset” policy with the Russian Federation. Prophetically, and as a result of an incompetent translation, the letters on the button read “overload” instead of “reset.”

Raytheon Company has received a $1.7 billion Direct Commercial Sales contract to upgrade Saudi Arabia’s Patriot Air and Missile Defense System to the latest Configuration-3. The award includes ground-system hardware, a full training package and support equipment upgrades.

LaBarge, Inc. a provider of electronics manufacturing services (EMS), has been awarded a contract from The Boeing Company to produce wiring harnesses for the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) System. Financial terms were not disclosed. LaBarge anticipates follow-on orders.

Israel’s Ministry of Defense is working to integrate all four of the anti-missile defense systems developed in the country into a national command and control center for the interception of enemy missiles. Senior US officials say that this initiative will not only benefit Israel but also US forces stationed in the Middle East and “US allies that do not have diplomatic relations with Israel,” US weekly “Defense News” reports.
