U.S. SEES MASSIVE IRANIAN ATTACK ON EUROPE

June 30, 2010

The U.S. intelligence community has determined that Iran could launch a major missile strike on Europe.  Iran is building an arsenal designed to conduct long-range missile strikes on Western Europe.

“It would more likely be a salvo kind of attack, where you would be dealing potentially with scores or even hundreds of missiles,” Defense Secretary Robert Gates said.

Under the United States “Phased Adaptive Approach”,  the Pentagon would oversee the deployment of the SM-3 sea-based missile defense systems aboard Aegis-class cruisers in the Mediterranean Sea. NATO has already approved the plan.

“This would give us the ability to protect our troops, our bases, our facilities and our allies in Europe,” Gates said.

U.S. Must Sustain S. Korea’s Military Capabilities

June 30, 2010

One little noticed decision reached at the G-20 Summit was to postpone the transfer of wartime command of allied forces on the Korean Peninsula, originally scheduled for April 2012, until 2015.

More time also allows the Obama Administration to consider the broader challenge of security in Northeast Asia. A central feature of the security environment in the region is the need for local allies to take on more responsibility for their own defense.

That is the motivation behind the transfer of OPCON or operational control of forces on the Korean Peninsula to South Korea. But for allies to do more in their own defense they must have the tools.

NATO Report: Middle East Programs Have Achieved Little Since 1994

June 29, 2010

A NATO report concluded that its programs in the Middle East have achieved little since 1994. The report cited the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative and the Mediterranean Dialogue, which include Gulf, Levant and North African states.

The report urged NATO to demonstrate “strategic patience” with the Middle East and focus on the threat from Iran. The authors said the alliance should seek to reach an agreement based on “new and broader concepts of security, taking into account conventional and unconventional dangers, as well as political, economic, social and cultural issues.”

“The allies should be open to transparent consultations with its MD and ICI partners on the implications of a possible nuclear breakout by Iran,” the report said.
