Further confirmation that Iran is seeking ballistic missile defenses came from inside Iran this week. They are already in the midst negotiating sale of S-300 missile defense systems from Russia. Members of the Iranian military said that they have consider measures to protect their nuclear centers against possible strikes from Israel or other Western powers.
Iran is considering possible means of protecting itself from ballistic missile strikes, the nation’s Fars News Agency reported last week.
“Given the type of enemies’ capabilities, we are planning and designing for confrontation against the threats posed by ballistic missiles,” Gen. Hassan Mansourian said in an interview.
“We have been contemplating fully repelling all types of air and space threats against Iran,” he added.
“We are trying to give the necessary depth to our defense capability in order to make the enemies face different layers of resistance before they reach their targets and to disrupt the thinking plans of the (enemy) pilots and of those who design these plans,” Mansourian stated.
Israel has reportedly conducted exercises simulating airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. “We have considered special measures for safeguarding nuclear centers such as Tehran, Isfahan and other sensitive and vital centers,” according to Mansourian.
